In July 2000, Rosemont Center, Inc. became an independent entity from the Sisters of the Good Shepherd who owned and operated the Rosemont Center in Columbus since 1865. Consistent with their mission of providing for society's most marginalized women, the Sisters were called to Columbus near the end of the Civil War to provide for young girls who were following the army camps as prostitutes. During the early years, the Sisters provided care for the homeless and orphaned children.  During the depression in the 1930's, they served meals to the poor and unemployed in the vicinity, serving 100 meals three times a day.

The Sisters modified the program in the 1940's.  As the need for adult care and care of the homeless and orphaned children became less urgent, they began to focus their efforts on helping adolescent girls.

In the 1960's, the Sisters moved to the current thirty-five acre site and the specialized Rosemont School provided residential care, educational training, guidance, and treatment to girls with emotional and social problems.  Although many still think of Rosemont as a school for girls, the center began serving boys in 1978.

While the ownership and governance of the Rosemont Center shifted in July 2000, the Board of Trustees, Administration and staff members are committed to continuing the vision, mission and philosophy of the Sisters of the Good Shepherd.  In the words of Saint Mary Euphrasia, founder of the Sisters of the Good Shepherd, "Every individual is worth more than all the treasures of the world...always lift them up in their own eyes...whatever the color of their tears, they are always bitter." 

Today, Rosemont Center's array of programs and services reflect that philosophy by treating every child and family with respect and dignity, by walking with each youth and family through their journey of seeing themselves in a more positive manner, and by providing services to every youth regardless of race, ethnicity, culture, religion, sexual preference or life style.
